A year ago, I received a call from my dear friend Merceline Ouko. After exchanging brief pleasantries, her voice trembled as she delivered the heartbreaking news.
"He's gone, Elsa. Pepe has left us," she said, her words choking with emotion, leaving a haunting silence in their wake. Grappling with the weight of sorrow, I could only muster a response, "Thank you for letting me know. Could you please tell me what happened?" I hoped seeking more information might alleviate the growing storm of sadness within me.
Mercy proceeded to recount the tragic tale, and with each word, I stumbled and found myself sinking to the floor of my living room. My thoughts were consumed by Pepe's wife and children, left to face a world without him.
Edwin, or Pepe as we fondly called him, had been a constant presence throughout my lifetime. We referred to each other as "diaper-mates," a testament to the enduring bond we shared. Throughout our friendship, I marveled at his unshakable calm, even in the face of life's harshest challenges.
Prior to his untimely passing, Pepe had been diagnosed with leukemia, a relentless battle he had fought with unyielding determination. We were all so certain that Pepe would triumph over the illness, which is why the news of his death came as such a profound shock.
A year has now passed, but the memories of our lengthy phone conversations, countless rosary recitations, and his profound pride in his family remain etched in my heart.
Pepe's departure left me not only with cherished memories but also with a new friend, his wife, Delphine. Her strength is indescribable, her ability to swiftly gather her family and hold them close continues to amaze me. Delphine, I am very proud of you.
Consider this a tribute board for Pepe's memory. If you have any stories or messages you'd like to share about him, please feel free to post them in the comments. Let his spirit live on in our shared memories and heartfelt stories.
